A late monsoon sting in the tail for Nepal

Heavy rainfall in Nepal since Thursday has triggered 285 landslides, resulting in 15 fatalities, with three people still missing and another three injured. The recent monsoon event, which affected Nepal and Sikkim in India, led to multiple landslides, some of which had fatal consequences. The Kathmandu Post detailed these occurrences, while the Himalayan Times covered ongoing rescue operations.

Nepal maintains a comprehensive record of all hazard events via its Bipad portal. The map of landslides since Thursday, 24 September, can be viewed on this portal. The landslides were recorded across the entire country, with a notable concentration in the central region. A total of 285 distinct landslides have been documented, leading to 15 deaths, and three individuals remain missing, while three have sustained injuries. Among these, ten landslides were fatal.

One dramatic landslide incident, which occurred non-fatally at Chame in Manang, has gained widespread attention on social media, presented in a dramatic video. This landslide is believed to be a rotational landslide on the edge of a terrace. Additionally, extensive footage shows slope failures caused by a river's basal undercutting in Galkot.

Sikkim has also experienced heavy rainfall and subsequent landslides, with the most severe event taking place at Rimbi in West Sikkim. Here, 32 houses and four government accommodation blocks were rendered uninhabitable, displacing 107 people.
