Why does Bill Gates want AI laws? He says self-regulation is not enough

Billionaire and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has expressed grave concerns about the potential catastrophic consequences of artificial intelligence. During a recent interview on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” the tech mogul warned that AI could drive events leading to the deaths of a billion people. While discussing the urgent need for stronger safeguards around rapidly advancing AI technology, Gates emphasized that its combination with malicious intent poses a threat unlike anything seen before.

When asked directly if he believed AI could end all of humanity, Gates avoided a definitive answer but cautioned that the technology could indeed lead to catastrophic outcomes. However, he made it clear that self-regulation by AI companies alone would not suffice and advocated for legislation to establish necessary safeguards and monitoring mechanisms.

Gates stressed that while regulation may add some requirements for AI companies, it would not significantly impede the industry's development. His warnings echo the mounting concerns expressed by technology executives and policymakers worldwide. In July, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres echoed similar sentiments, calling for international cooperation to ensure the safe development and use of AI.
