Why BJP govt in UP is giving fillip to Yadav warrior’s folklore in poll season

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh is investing in promoting the folklore hero Veer Lorik, a Yadav warrior known for his bravery and fight against caste oppression, ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The Culture Department is constructing a 350-seat auditorium and library in Hasanpura village, Ballia district, to celebrate the legend of Veer Lorik.

The project, worth around Rs 4.97 crore with the first installment of Rs 1.36 crore already released, aims to make the legend accessible to younger audiences through performances of theatre, folk music, and storytelling. Ballia district already has Veer Lorik Akhara, a statue, and a sports stadium dedicated to the hero. The BJP views the project as a way to connect with the Yadav community, which is politically significant in the region.

Despite the BJP denying any political motives, Ballia's political dynamics and the growing influence of the Yadav community in the state could be factors in this promotion.
