What to watch Sunday: All the new shows and movies just added to HBO Max, MGM+, Hulu and more (Sept. 27)

Tonight (September 27), there's a lineup of new shows and movies to stream on various platforms. For music lovers, don't miss the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Paramount+ at 7:30 PM ET/4:30 PM PT, hosted by Snoop Dogg and featuring Madonna's first performance in 23 years.

On HBO Max, tune into the recent season premiere of Lanterns, a superhero buddy action comedy set in the DC universe. The series stars Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Green Lanterns from different generations, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Veteran Lantern Jordan mentors rookie recruit Stewart as they solve a murder mystery in the heartland, only for it to take a cosmic turn eventually. With Aaron Pierre's tour de force performance and Damon Lindelof's co-creativity, the show has garnered praise from critics.

For those who enjoy historical dramas, MGM+ offers A Tale of Two Cities, a limited series adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic novel. Set in London in 1782, the story follows Lucie Manette (Mirren Mack) who discovers her long-thought-dead father may be alive, and follows her journey to free her father and search for answers amidst the French Revolution. The show has earned a 86% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the last episode before the finale airing this week.
