We need to be cautious while implementing AI tools in libraries, says former V-C

Former Vice-Chancellor B.D. Kumbar cautioned against over-reliance on AI tools in libraries, warning that it could stifle human creativity and cognitive skills. Speaking at the State Librarians’ Conference valedictory function in Dharwad, Kumbar emphasized the need for cautious implementation of AI to enhance creativity and service provision.

He lamented the shortage of librarians in Karnataka, noting that while there were once around 35 librarians at Karnatak University, only two remained. Kumbar advocated for libraries to play a pivotal role in nurturing children's futures and urged the government to establish model libraries at the taluk level using legislators' grants.

Former MP I.G. Sanadi echoed similar concerns, highlighting the enduring value of knowledge acquired through reading books compared to information gleaned from digital devices. He also called for model libraries at the taluk level and stressed the importance of every gram panchayat having a well-equipped library and a librarian.

Sanadi encouraged the sangha to spearhead awareness campaigns and push for government action. P.V. Konnur, a resource person, proposed a movement to address library sector issues, with the sangha at the helm. Karnataka State Library Association president S.L. Kadadevaramath criticized the government for failing to recruit librarians, promising a protest in Bengaluru on October 5.

The conference resolved to address librarian vacancies, bolster rural and school libraries, and amend the Karnataka Public Libraries Act, 1965. Resource person Vinayak Bankapur presented a detailed report on the proceedings. Awards were bestowed upon exceptional paper presenters Krishna Maraddi, Koteppa B., and Shivaranjini Mogali.
