War Without End: Why Tinubu Must Step into the Wike–APC Governors’ Battle

Nyesom Wike holds a dual role as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory for President Bola Tinubu, yet remains a key figure within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This seemingly contradictory position has ignited a heated dispute within the ruling coalition. The crux of the disagreement lies in the Rainbow Coalition, which Wike claims serves to bolster Tinubu's re-election bid in 2027.

However, the APC governors interpret it as a network that could siphon votes and loyalty away from the party's existing infrastructure.

Despite their shared desire for the same goal, the two factions maintain divergent viewpoints. Wike insists that the coalition aims to expand support for the president, while the Progressive Governors’ Forum refuses to endorse any arrangement that might undermine their candidates. The tension has escalated beyond mere disagreement, with Wike accusing certain governors of being politically apathetic and their allies alleging that Wike is undermining party loyalty from within the government.

Even within the APC, opinions diverge. Some see Wike's involvement as a valuable asset for Tinubu's coalition, while others view it as evidence of a minister constructing an independent political base utilizing the access his cabinet position provides. The Presidential Campaign Council has urged Tinubu to intervene, with spokesman Ima Niboro describing the conflict as a disagreement among allies who share a common goal but differ in approach.

The delicate nature of this dispute stems more from practicality than sentiment. Presidential elections are determined nationally, but voter engagement occurs locally, and governors hold sway over these structures that ultimately determine turnout. Wike's coalition operates above this level, potentially creating further discord.
