U.K. police evacuate homes near U.S. air base and detain men on suspected explosives offensives

Several men have been arrested in Whelford, a village near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, after a major incident was declared and several properties were evacuated. Gloucestershire Police confirmed that the men were apprehended on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act, as investigations into the incident continue. Residents from multiple properties were temporarily relocated to a leisure centre while police and emergency services responded to the situation.

The Army’s specialist explosive ordnance disposal team has been dispatched to examine a number of vehicles as part of the ongoing operation. Police have established a cordon around the affected area and believe the incident is contained. A significant presence of emergency services, including a Hazardous Area Response Team, was reported in Whelford.

Gloucestershire Police stated that they are working closely with partner agencies and have activated established emergency response procedures. The force explained that the evacuation is due to the declaration of a major incident following the arrest of several men on suspicion of Explosives Act offenses. Although the incident occurred near RAF Fairford, home to the United States Air Force, police have not indicated a connection to the military base.

The investigation is ongoing, with specialist teams examining the vehicles and authorities maintaining the cordon around the affected area.
