Turkiye launches 1GW offshore wind tender

Türkiye's first 1 gigawatt (GW) offshore wind project is set to generate an investment environment of approximately $3 billion, according to Ibrahim Erden, head of the Turkish Wind Energy Association (TÜREB). Speaking at WindEnergy Hamburg, Erden revealed that around half of the $3 billion investment will be dedicated to offshore wind turbines, while the remaining funds will cover expenses such as electricity infrastructure, construction, and logistics.

Türkiye's first offshore wind tender is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027 and has attracted the attention of international developers, investors, and manufacturers. Deputy Energy and Natural Resources Minister Zafer Demircan told Anadolu Agency that the tender will be announced by the end of this year, with the auction planned for the first quarter of 2027.

Although offshore wind projects are more expensive than onshore alternatives, Erden highlighted that they offer significantly higher efficiency. He noted that while onshore wind has a capacity factor of around 35 percent, offshore wind operates at 45 percent to 50 percent. Despite the higher costs and technological requirements, Erden stated that initial expenses will naturally decrease as the technology becomes more widespread.

He added that, beyond energy generation, the offshore wind ecosystem is expected to drive growth in several other sectors once it becomes economically viable.
