The Hidden Story Behind Cabo Roig’s Roundabout Pyramid

Drivers on the N-332 in Cabo Roig are focused on traffic, but a small pyramid in the middle of the roundabout serves as a curious landmark. The reason behind its existence is revealed on a plaque attached to the monument. The pyramid was constructed using bricks from a roadside casilla, or cottage, demolished in April 1988. The casilla was a dwelling for Spain's peones camineros, who were responsible for maintaining highways.

These workers, who once walked the length of the road, made regular checks, removed obstacles, and repaired any damage. Casillas provided workers with a nearby home and shelter for their tools. The tradition began in the 18th century and expanded during Spain's road development in the 19th century. By the late 20th century, the Cabo Roig cottage had outlived its purpose and was demolished.

However, its bricks were repurposed to create the pyramid, which now stands as a modest tribute to the road workers who maintained Spain's highways. These workers were often overlooked, but their labor ensured the country moved forward.
