Supreme Court vote shadows Maine Sen. Susan Collins in her first bid after abortion rights decision

Maine Senator Susan Collins is facing a tough re-election bid after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a decision she played a key role in. For years, Planned Parenthood's support helped convince Erin Evans to vote for Collins, as she believed the moderate Republican would protect abortion access. However, Evans is now "just furious with myself" for having voted in Collins' favor.

The 56-year-old from Portland described Collins' critical vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court as a betrayal. Collins has defended her 2018 vote to confirm Kavanaugh, stating she "does not regret" that vote. Despite this, Collins has long called herself a "pro-choice" Republican and a supporter of a woman's right to an abortion.

The upcoming election will be the first time Collins is on the ballot since the Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, which banned abortion in much of the United States. Democrats hope that voters like Evans will help flip the seat in a state they are prioritizing in their quest to retake the Senate.
