Student protesters confront NVIDIA executive over AI’s climate impact

On September 23, student protesters disrupted a panel discussion at Climate Week NYC, questioning the environmental impact of artificial intelligence (AI). The demonstrators confronted Josh Parker, NVIDIA's head of sustainability, during the event in New York City. Videos shared by the Sunrise Movement captured the protesters challenging panel participants on AI's environmental implications and potential benefits.

One protester accused corporations and data centers of contributing to climate damage, while another questioned NVIDIA's sustainability claims, citing an emissions figure of 15 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. The Sunrise Movement stated that the protest aimed to combat corporate "greenwashing" and criticized Climate Week organizers for inviting AI executives to speak on climate issues.

This disruption comes as the rapid expansion of AI has intensified scrutiny on the environmental costs associated with data centers, which are crucial for running AI systems.
