Since Satya Niketan collapse, 596 properties razed, 190 sealed over violations: Delhi Corporation

Since the tragic collapse of a five-storey building in Delhi's Satya Niketan on September 6, resulting in seven fatalities, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been aggressively enforcing city regulations to ensure public safety. As a direct consequence, 596 properties have been demolished, 190 sealed, and nearly 100 demolition orders have been issued to date. This enforcement drive stems from a citywide survey conducted by the MCD that revealed a myriad of building and safety violations.

The MCD's investigation identified 2,453 properties being used as paying guest (PG) accommodations, with only 730 having proper building plans or sanctioned plans. Shockingly, only 31 of these establishments possess a No Objection Certificate from the Delhi Fire Service, while structural stability certificates are available for only eight buildings. Additionally, only four of the problematic properties have been classified as "dangerous."

The MCD's enforcement actions have led to the vacating of three dangerous buildings, prompting their owners to appeal the notices in the Delhi High Court. In response to the court's stay on the notices, the MCD has directed that no PG operations can resume until the affected buildings are deemed structurally safe. Furthermore, 10 buildings were deemed vulnerable, with owners and occupants instructed to undertake necessary repairs as outlined in structural audit reports.
