Shane Beamer explains what went wrong vs Alabama, defends LaNorris Sellers

South Carolina football suffered a 49-18 loss to No. 8 Alabama on September 26, extending their conference losing streak to seven games. Coach Shane Beamer's record since 2025 is currently 1-9, as he has lost seven of his last 11 games against Power 4 teams and posted a 6-12 overall record since his career-high 9-4 season two years ago. In five of their last seven SEC defeats, South Carolina led at one point, with two games leading by over 15 points.

During the Alabama game, South Carolina found themselves down 38-10 by halftime, allowing 21 second-quarter points. The team's inconsistency proved costly, as they were up and down throughout the match. Alabama's sophomore quarterback, Keelon Russell, engineered a stellar performance with 489 total yards on 57 plays, while South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers finished 18-of-30 for 185 passing yards, scoring a touchdown and a pick-six.

Sellers defended his play, stating, "Just trying to play fast... he made a play on the ball." However, Beamer acknowledged the inconsistency within his team, asserting, "You get beat by 31 on the road when you're inconsistent and up and down. We're not a consistent enough football team right now." He defended Sellers, believing he made "some really gutty plays tonight and gave us a chance." Beamer ultimately took responsibility, stating, "It's on me."
