Serbia's Russian-friendly President Vucic announces resignation, plans to run for PM

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced his resignation on September 27, paving the way for him to run as prime minister in the upcoming October parliamentary elections. Vucic has been serving as either the prime minister or president since 2014, with his current presidential term set to conclude in May 2027. By stepping down early, Vucic can now campaign as the Serbian Progressive Party's right-wing populist candidate for prime minister in the October 25 elections.

In a speech to supporters outside the Presidency building in Belgrade, Vucic expressed his pride in the accomplishments made during his tenure and thanked the nation for their support. He revealed that he had planned his early retirement as early as June and had dissolved the country's parliament on September 9, announcing snap legislative elections for the following month.

Vucic, known for his right-wing populist views and strong ties with Russia, has faced ongoing pressure from anti-government protesters since November 2025. The protests were sparked by a devastating train station roof collapse in the town of Novi Sad, which resulted in 15 deaths and was attributed to government corruption.

Despite Serbia's longstanding close relationship with Russia, President Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to Serbia in August aimed to improve bilateral relations. Analysts predict that if Vucic becomes prime minister, he will effectively retain the most powerful position in the country.
