Russia backs India's bid for permanent seat on UNSC

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed support for India's bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. In a speech to the UN General Assembly, Lavrov argued that UN Security Council reform should prioritize expanding representation from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, rather than adding additional seats for Western nations. He specifically criticized Germany and Japan, stating they are on a trajectory towards militarism and revanchism.

Lavrov emphasized the importance of broadening representation for Asia, Africa, and Latin America. He reaffirmed Russia's support for Brazil's and India's candidatures for a permanent seat on the Security Council. Lavrov also highlighted the need to address the interests of the African continent in these discussions.

Speaking about global challenges, Lavrov said Russia is collaborating with its allies and strategic partners, including BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, and the Eurasian Economic Union, to tackle these issues. He underscored Russia's efforts to find solutions for the world's problems through cooperation with these entities.

Lavrov also stressed the UN's crucial role in discussions surrounding international information security. He advocated for a unifying agenda with concrete ideas and projects, urging the UN to take a central role in these talks instead of relying on narrower fora.
