Rebuilding Vancouver Canucks look to set new foundation as NHL season begins

The Vancouver Canucks have entered a major rebuild after a disastrous season where they finished last in the NHL standings. Rookie head coach Manny Malhotra emphasized that progress is more important than wins and losses, with an emphasis on intangibles such as intensity, tenacity, and winning puck battles. Defenceman Zeev Buium stressed that the team's competitive spirit would drive them to play their best.

After dealing star defenceman Quinn Hughes, Vancouver finished the season with a 25-49-8 record, prompting an overhaul of the front office and coaching staff. The new leadership brought in Daniel and Henrik Sedin as co-presidents and elevated Ryan Johnson to GM. They added NHL veterans Brendan Gallagher and Luke Schenn to help guide the team's raw talent.

Despite injuries and setbacks, players expressed positive energy and high standards for the upcoming season. The team will be looking for up-and-coming players to earn spots on the NHL roster and for established players to rediscover their former skills. Goalie Kevin Lankinen noted that there are positive vibes around the organization.

However, the team will be without star goalie Thatcher Demko, who underwent season-ending hip surgery.
