Pope decries 'scourge' of sexual abuse during France visit

Pope Leo visited the Lourdes shrine in France for three days as part of his four-day trip to the country. The shrine is a site of healing for Catholics and has drawn many victims of sexual abuse seeking to overcome their trauma. The Pope emphasized respect for all life, including the sick and frail, in a speech that some interpreted as a subtle criticism of euthanasia and abortion. He encouraged the faithful to view their mobility aids, such as crutches and wheelchairs, as symbols of their welcome and respect.

Later on Sunday, Pope Leo met with seven adult survivors of sexual abuse, part of the Vatican's ongoing investigation into the widespread molestation of children by clergy members. A 2021 report indicated that around 330,000 children had been abused by Catholic priests and lay leaders in France between 1950 and 2020. While the Pope did not directly address the issue during his Mass at Lourdes, he called for humility among clergy members, stating that admitting mistakes is essential for spiritual growth. He urged the Church to humbly accept purifying scrutiny to heal deep wounds and painful errors.

However, some survivors expressed skepticism about the Pope's visit leading to immediate changes within the Church. Michele Le Reun-Gaigne, a co-leader of a French survivors' association, told Reuters that progress is moving "very slowly" and that significant changes won't happen overnight. Earlier in the day, Pope Leo met with French bishops, praising their courageous response to the abuse crisis and thanking them for their commitment to truth, justice, forgiveness, and prevention. He urged the bishops to maintain vigilance and continue along the path they had begun.
