Police point to possible business rivalry in Lwandle mass shooting

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has indicated that a possible business rivalry may have been the motive behind a fatal mass shooting that occurred in Lwandle, Cape Town. The incident took place at a shisanyama, a braai (barbecue) gathering, on the early hours of Sunday morning. During this event, ten individuals were killed and eleven others were wounded by armed attackers. No arrests have been made in connection to the incident.

According to Western Cape Police Commissioner Sizakhele Dyantyi, the attackers seemed to have fired their weapons randomly. Mr. Dyantyi explained that the victims were present at the shisanyama, braaiing meat when the armed assailants entered the scene. He noted that people were consuming alcohol while waiting for their meat to be ready and continued drinking after the attackers arrived. The significant number of bottles present at the scene suggests a large gathering of people when the perpetrators opened fire.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi, has established a multi-disciplinary team to investigate the shooting. This team, led by serious violent crime detectives, has been formed to probe the incident, which resulted in the deaths of ten people and the wounding of eleven others.

The Lwandle Community Policing Forum expressed its sadness over the shooting and the loss of patrons at the shisanyama.
