Piecemeal steps won’t work, Rahul Gandhi doubts stand vindicated: Congress

The Congress party has vehemently criticized the Election Commission's proposed measures related to SIR (Scrutiny of Identity Records), claiming that these steps acknowledge the electoral process as a "disaster". The Congress argues that piecemeal measures aimed at deleting or at-risk voters will fail to alleviate the widespread disenfranchisement.

The Election Commission recently sought to address concerns raised by its commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi following reports of a deep internal division within the body over SIR-related decisions over the past ten months. The Congress, led by Jairam Ramesh and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has called for the immediate resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), alleging his political biases and questioning his ability to conduct fair elections.

State Chief Ministers from Congress-ruled regions have echoed similar sentiments, asserting that Rahul Gandhi's doubts about the Commission's impartiality have been confirmed. The Congress has also accused the CEC of subverting democracy, following revelations made by former Kerala Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson. The party plans to discuss its strategy at an upcoming Congress Working Committee meeting.
