Passenger Dies After Jumping From Moving Bus in Lagos

A passenger tragically lost their life after leaping from a moving commercial bus in Lagos. The bus had reportedly collided with a median pole at Ogunlana Junction in Ojuelegba, Surulere. The Volkswagen commercial bus, bearing registration number LND 130 XR, was allegedly being driven recklessly by an intoxicated driver. LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki confirmed the incident, attributing the erratic movement of the vehicle to the driver's erratic behavior.

This prompted other motorists to exercise caution as they approached from behind. The male passenger, in a desperate attempt to escape from the out-of-control vehicle, jumped from the moving bus, sustaining severe injuries upon impact with the ground. Sadly, the injuries proved fatal. LASTMA officials were quick to respond to the crash, securing the accident scene, managing traffic, and removing the damaged bus and the deceased's remains from the roadway.

The police provided security cover, while the State Emergency Management Agency evacuated the deceased's body. Bakare-Oki emphasized the dangers of driving under the influence, reckless driving, and using vehicles with mechanical defects. He urged all motorists to perform thorough mechanical inspections before embarking on journeys, emphasizing the importance of checking the braking system, tires, steering mechanism, and other safety components.

Bakare-Oki commiserated with the deceased's family and reasserted LASTMA's commitment to swiftly addressing road crashes, managing traffic effectively, and clearing accident scenes promptly.
