Nigeria wins WAFU B under-17 women tournament

The Nigerian women's under-17 national team, known as the Flamingos, emerged victorious in the 2026 WAFU B U-17 women's tournament after securing a commanding 4-0 win over Togo on the final day of the matches. This triumph marked a historic achievement for Nigeria as they became the first team to win all five of their matches, setting a new standard in the tournament's second edition. The Flamingos established a flawless record, leaving Ghana, who finished in second place, to relinquish the title they had won in 2024.

Harmony Chidera was the standout performer for Nigeria, netting two penalty goals to lead her team to victory. Umejiaku Oluebube and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi also contributed with crucial goals, scoring one each. Chidera's first penalty came in the 15th minute following a foul on Adegbuyi, and she repeated her success by converting another penalty in the 35th minute.

Oluebube added the third goal with a deft cross from the wing which found the back of the net, and Adegbuyi sealed the win with a well-deserved goal in the 90th minute.

Victory for Nigeria was secured with an impressive 15 points, a six-point lead over Ghana, who will host the Ivory Coast in their final match of the tournament. The Flamingos' success provides them with increased confidence as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, which will be held in Morocco from October 17 to November 7.
