Nations can shape own AI ecosystems: Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated during the 81st United Nations General Assembly that every nation has the right to develop its own artificial intelligence ecosystem, tailored to its national objectives. India regards AI as a crucial component of its partnership strategy with the Global South, emphasizing it as a catalyst for human empowerment, economic growth, and the resolution of large-scale societal challenges.

Jaishankar highlighted the significance of democratizing technology and promoting cultural understanding in this context.

At the AI Impact Summit held in February, India brought together leading experts in the field to discuss the transformative potential of AI. The minister stressed that nations should have the autonomy to establish their AI frameworks, including model development and deployment strategies. He underscored that expanding access to technology should be accompanied by mutual respect, as it can enhance prospects for peace among nations.

Jaishankar also addressed the challenges faced by the Global South, which confronts a fourfold crisis involving food security, fuel, fertilizer, and finance. He noted that misuse of AI exacerbates these issues, leading to increased bias and undermining mutual respect. The minister stressed the importance of promoting cultural understanding and rebalancing the global economy, political landscape, and cultural norms to ensure a more equitable and peaceful world.
