Meta misled users about Facebook data practices, New Mexico jury finds

A New Mexico jury ruled on Friday that Meta Platforms misled the state's residents by making false claims about its handling of users' data, particularly in relation to a 2016 political campaign. The verdict came after a two-week trial following a 2021 lawsuit filed by New Mexico's attorney general. The case stemmed from allegations that a political consulting firm, Cambridge Analytica, had obtained data from millions of Facebook users without their consent.

Meta spokesperson stated that the company disagreed with the verdict and would continue to defend itself against attempts to distort its record. They emphasized their commitment to free speech, protecting user information, and providing control over personal data. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez expressed disappointment, stating that the case exposed Meta's disregard for rules and its failure to disclose data sharing practices and policies on hate speech and misinformation.

The jury found 26 of 29 statements made by Meta misleading, rejecting claims that the company misled consumers about its efforts to remove harmful content and fact-checking practices. The maximum penalty sought by the state was determined based on the number of people affected, with the possibility of up to $5,000 per violation.

The state will also seek changes from Meta, which could include corrections to past misstatements and an audit of its data management practices.
