MCMC blocked 101.66 million spoof calls from Feb to Aug

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in partnership with telecommunications providers, successfully blocked a staggering 101.66 million scam or spoof calls between February and August. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching revealed this impressive feat was made possible by the implementation of the Inter Operator Spoofing Gateway initiative, which has been operational since the start of the year.

Scammers from abroad exploit Caller ID Spoofing techniques, making it seem as though the calls are coming from local telco networks to trick unsuspecting victims.

Ms. Teo explained that the 101.66 million blocked spoof calls serve as a testament to the initiative's effectiveness. Responding to inquiries about the number of scam calls blocked, she stated that the MCMC will hold an online meeting with Meta in the near future to address public concerns related to blocked WhatsApp accounts. The meeting aims to gather more information on the matter, and the ministry will await the results obtained during the discussion.

Furthermore, the MCMC has previously reported its investigation into complaints concerning hacked, blocked, or inaccessible WhatsApp accounts, and has submitted the cases to Meta for further clarification and appropriate action.
