Kedah reports first human rabies death in 28 years

The State Health Department of Kedah announced that a 31-year-old man from Kubang Pasu district died of rabies on September 19, marking the first human case in the state since 1998. According to a statement, the man had a history of being bitten by a stray dog in August. Despite receiving treatment at a health facility following the incident, he did not receive post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for rabies.

Symptoms began on September 18, including weakness, difficulty swallowing, fear of water, anxiety, and behavioral changes. The patient received treatment again on September 19 and was admitted to the ICU the following day.

Samples were taken on September 24, and a laboratory test confirmed the patient had rabies. Following the diagnosis, Kedah's Health Department, along with Kubang Pasu District Health Office, Kedah Veterinary Services Department, and relevant parties, implemented control and prevention measures, including active case monitoring, health education, vaccination of pets, surveillance of animal bites, risk assessment, and control measures for stray wild animals in the affected area.

The investigation aims to determine the source of infection and transmission route, including the history of exposure, contact identification, risk factors, and time line analysis.

Kedah's Health Department emphasized that rabies can spread through bites, scratches, or contact with infected animal saliva. The public is reminded that rabies can be transmitted through bites, scratches, or contact with infected animal saliva. The department urged residents to ensure their pets, especially dogs and cats, receive rabies vaccination, avoid approaching, touching, or feeding wild animals, and not take or keep animals with unknown health status or rabies vaccination status.

Immediate washing of any wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and seeking medical attention at a government or private healthcare facility for risk assessment and appropriate treatment if bitten or scratched by an animal. The public is also advised not to handle animal carcasses without knowing the cause of death, as prompt action after animal bite or scratch and timely rabies PEP administration are crucial in preventing rabies.
