KDF soldier found dead at Marsabit Operation Base

In a tragic incident that occurred on September 27, 2026, a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier named Corporal Kelvin Thuku was discovered dead with his throat slit at an operation base in Marsabit County. The manner of his death is currently being investigated as a suspected murder or suicide. Thuku's colleague raised the alarm after failing to reach him by phone.

Upon investigating, the colleague found Thuku lying in a pool of blood with a deep wound to his throat. The body was taken to Marsabit County Referral Hospital Mortuary for preservation pending a postmortem examination. Blood-stained military knife and the soldier's mobile phone were also recovered at the scene. Police and military authorities are conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding Thuku's death and whether it was an act of suicide or involved another person.

The incident has brought to light the growing trend of suicides among police officers and other members of the disciplined forces, which is often attributed to stress at work. The World Health Organization attributes such cases to various factors including joblessness, death, academic failures, legal difficulties, financial problems, bullying, previous suicide attempts, family history of suicide, alcoholism, substance misuse, depression, and bipolar disorder.

The Kenyan government has acknowledged the issue and is taking steps to address it, including establishing counseling sections within departments and hiring counselors to manage these cases.
