Jason Newsted Remembers Cliff Burton 40 Years After Legendary Metallica Bassist’s Passing

On September 27th, 1986, legendary Metallica bassist Cliff Burton passed away in a tour bus accident in Sweden. Now 40 years later, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted reflects on Burton's incredible talent in an interview with Heavy Consequence. Newsted marvels at Burton's ability to play guitar even after a long day of work, saying "Cliff could wake up and do it.

He fondly recalls Burton's skill being evident even as a teenager, comparing him to bassists Les Claypool who are of similar age and origin. Newsted praises Hetfield and Lars Ulrich for their foresight in moving from Los Angeles to San Francisco to join Burton in the band, as they recognized his incredible potential.

Reflecting on Burton's playing in 1985, Newsted states "It was like, why do you even bother? Here's the firewood... Maybe if I try really hard, I could be a tenth of as good as that." Despite the awe and respect Newsted has for Burton's abilities, he admits it was intimidating playing alongside such a virtuoso. He admires how fans continue to honor Burton's memory decades after his death, acknowledging "I think that what I like the most... is how everyone continues to show such respect for his efforts."

Metallica remains active today, with Robert Trujillo currently serving as bassist. The band is preparing to perform at Las Vegas' Sphere as part of their "Life Burns Faster" residency on October 1st, and will begin a North American leg of their ongoing "M72 World Tour" in 2027.
