Ireland squad vote to play Israel despite Gaza unease

Dublin - Ireland's football team has decided to play a Nations League tie against Israel, despite goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu's withdrawal due to unease over the war in Gaza. The team voted to continue the fixture, with a significant majority in favor, according to the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) head David Courell. The match will take place in Backa Topola, Serbia, due to concerns over disruption and security.

Bazunu, 24, explained his decision in an Instagram post, stating that he has not taken it lightly and feels it would be wrong to participate in the fixtures against Israel. Ireland has historically supported the Palestinian cause, with the country formally recognizing a Palestinian state in 2024 and criticizing Israel over the Gaza conflict.

Israel, however, rejects claims that its conduct in Gaza constitutes genocide. The Israeli Football Association (FA) hailed Ireland's decision, emphasizing the importance of separating football from politics. Despite the controversy, the Irish team will wear black armbands during the match and donate profits from a subsequent game to charity.

This decision comes after national broadcaster RTE confirmed Ireland's boycott of the Eurovision Song Contest next year due to Israel's participation.
