INEC has no candidates, no party – Amupitan

Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has emphasized the commission's impartiality ahead of the 2027 general election. During a meeting with the Emir of Zazzau, Amupitan confirmed that INEC has no preferred candidates or political parties. Speaking from the commission's official social media account, the chairman highlighted the importance of traditional institutions in the electoral process due to their significant influence within communities.

He reiterated that elections are a social contract between citizens and officials, and public trust is vital for democracy to succeed. INEC has been proactive in its preparations for the upcoming polls, moving away from last-minute efforts and focusing on testing and strengthening its systems. Amupitan assured the Emir of Zazzau that INEC remains committed to maintaining neutrality, fairness, and transparency in the elections.

He also mentioned that the commission will continue to engage with traditional institutions and other stakeholders in its preparations for the 2027 General Election.
