Indian Railways rolls out AI system to boost freight wagon security: Here’s how it works

Indian Railways has launched a new AI-based system called Project DRISHTI to enhance the security of freight trains and streamline the inspection of freight wagons. Developed by Indian Railways in collaboration with IIT Guwahati, the technology utilizes AI, high-speed cameras, intelligent lighting, and secure networking to monitor freight wagons as they pass through designated monitoring points.

Project DRISHTI is capable of identifying wagon numbers and examining the condition of wagon doors, locks, and seals. This enables the detection of any potential irregularities that may need attention. The inspection findings can also be recorded digitally, allowing railway staff to promptly respond to any issues that may arise.

The AI system's importance lies in its ability to expedite the inspection process, particularly in challenging geographical and environmental conditions such as those encountered in Northeast Frontier Railway. Traditionally, checking freight wagon doors, locks, and seals was a manual and time-consuming task, often difficult to perform at night or during adverse weather conditions. Project DRISHTI aims to reduce the reliance on manual inspection by employing technology to carry out checks more swiftly and consistently.

By providing faster information about potential problems with wagon doors, locks, or seals, the AI-based monitoring system is expected to assist frontline railway personnel, including RPF and commercial staff. This enables them to take timely action, minimizing delays in freight operations. Ultimately, the technology-enabled monitoring is anticipated to safeguard consignments, reduce delays, and facilitate the work of railway personnel by enabling quicker identification of irregularities and reducing dependence on manual inspection alone.
