Gunmen attack Plateau mining site, kill five, injure two

On Saturday, gunmen attacked a mining site in Marit village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, resulting in the deaths of five miners and injuries to two others. This assault has raised concerns over the safety of residents and workers in certain regions of the state. The victims were engaged in mining operations when they were targeted by the assailants.

Just days prior, another mining-related tragedy occurred in Plateau State, where four suspected illegal miners perished following the collapse of a sand excavation pit in Tangur community, Bokkos LGA. These two incidents, occurring under distinct circumstances, have drawn renewed attention to the dangers faced by individuals involved in mining and other mineral-related pursuits across the state.

Rwang Tengwong, spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), confirmed the attack, stating that "Five persons were killed while two others sustained injuries." He described the situation as both "sad and painful," emphasizing that the community was once again experiencing the loss of lives due to violence. Tengwong strongly condemned the attack and urged security agencies to swiftly enhance measures designed to safeguard communities and prevent future attacks.
