Ghana moves to lower domestic airfares amid rising ticket prices

Ghana is implementing measures to lower domestic airfares as ticket prices continue to rise, according to the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). Director General Rev Stephen Wilfred Arthur revealed these efforts on September 25, 2026, aiming to address concerns over high fares. The GCAA is encouraging more airlines to enter the domestic market and reducing operating costs, such as by eliminating import duties on aircraft spare parts.

Arthur emphasized that while airfares are not set by the GCAA, as the pricing is largely determined by market forces, the regulator can intervene against anti-competitive practices. He acknowledged that fuel and aircraft leasing costs significantly impact ticket prices. The regulator highlighted the importance of safety and security as more airlines enter the market, while lower fares could boost domestic air travel and support growth in Ghana's aviation sector.

Recent reports have pointed to cost pressures in the sub-region, with aviation fuel accounting for 30 to 35 percent of airline operating costs. Ghana is following a similar approach to Nigeria, which has been affected by rising airline operating costs due to fuel, foreign exchange, maintenance, training, and financing. The GCAA is also encouraging competition by inviting more qualified airlines to join the domestic market, potentially increasing capacity and competition.
