Germany still winless under Klopp after loss to Greece

Jurgen Klopp's quest for his first victory as Germany's manager remained unfinished after his team suffered a home defeat to Greece in the Nations League. The former Liverpool manager took charge of his second match in charge, following a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands on Thursday. Germany's hopes were dashed in the 74th minute when Greece's Dimitrios Kourbelis scored a goal that deflected off Joshua Kimmich.

Despite controlling the game, the hosts, who featured a largely changed lineup and introduced Florian Wirtz from the bench, were unable to find the back of the net. Greece, ranked 41st globally, had never previously triumphed over Germany in their 10 previous encounters, having lost seven and drawn three. Klopp, 59, was given a four-year contract in July, replacing Julian Nagelsmann who departed after Germany's unexpected World Cup loss to Paraguay in the quarter-finals.

The loss to Greece left Germany winless in their last four matches since beating Ivory Coast in the second group game at this summer's World Cup. The result saw Greece climb to the top of Nations League Group 2, having also defeated Serbia earlier in the day, positioning them well for a potential quarter-final appearance. By defeating the highly ranked 12th team in the world, Greece recorded their biggest win by a margin of world rankings since they defeated England at Wembley in 2024, when the Three Lions were ranked fourth.
