Gachagua calls for bigger diaspora role in Kenya’s governance

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has advocated for a more prominent role for Kenyans living abroad in shaping the governance of their home country, citing the significant economic influence the diaspora wields. During a visit to Dallas, Texas, Gachagua emphasized that the diaspora's economic contributions, particularly through remittances, have shifted over the decades to become Kenya's leading source of foreign currency.

He argued that given their substantial financial support, Kenyans abroad should be granted a more substantial involvement in national decision-making processes. "Though you are away from Kenya, you have such a big impact on what happens at home, and therefore you cannot be spectators in the management of the affairs of our country," Gachagua stated.

He urged the diaspora to become "serious partners" in the management of Kenya’s affairs, highlighting how their remittances enable the country to meet external obligations and cover import costs. Gachagua also acknowledged the challenges many Kenyans face in their pursuit of success abroad, congratulating those who have built careers and investments in the United States.

He encouraged the diaspora to use their experiences to contribute positively to Kenya’s development, stressing that their achievements prove they can succeed in any country. The diaspora's concerns about governance, public debt, and service delivery were also addressed, with Gachagua calling for more transparency and accountability to address these issues.
