G25 urges Negeri Sembilan MB to resign

The G25 coalition of seasoned civil servants has called on Negeri Sembilan's Chief Minister, Ismail Lasim, to step down from office. Their criticism centers on Ismail's role in the controversy surrounding Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir's removal as the state's Yang Dipertuan Besar.

Ismail, a seven-term Umno assemblyman, was appointed as Chief Minister on August 2nd by Tuanku Muhriz. However, he signed a proclamation the following day seeking Tuanku Muhriz's removal. This act, coupled with conflicting explanations about the document's validity, has cast doubt on Ismail's credibility.

The G25 argues that Ismail's actions have diminished his moral authority to govern. Their statement suggests that attempting to remove a ruler is equivalent to treason, a serious offense under Section 121B of the Penal Code, which could result in up to 40 years in prison, as well as sedition. They urge the authorities to take a strong stance against any acts of treason or sedition in the ongoing Negeri Sembilan royal dispute.

The G25 emphasizes the importance of upholding the Constitution and the rule of law. They fear that failing to do so could lead to a gradual erosion of law and order.

Ismail, previously an assemblyman for Juasseh, claimed he signed the proclamation under duress and reported the matter to the police. He also stated the document was invalid due to non-compliance with the Negeri Sembilan constitution. Nevertheless, he later endorsed a statement by his 10 executive council members allegedly confirming Tuanku Muhriz's removal as ruler.

The Attorney-General's Chambers subsequently ruled that the Chief Minister and his executive council have no authority to remove the Yang Dipertuan Besar or declare his position vacant. Tuanku Muhriz subsequently rescinded the appointments of the 10 executive council members.
