From defending doctors to politics: Davji Atellah signals Lang’ata bid

Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary-General Davji Atellah has indicated a shift from his role defending doctors to a potential political career in Lang'ata. Atellah shared his intentions on his X account on September 27, 2026, stating he would utilize his advocacy experience for doctors to serve the people of Lang'ata.

"I have spent years standing with doctors on the streets, at negotiation tables and in difficult conversations where the welfare and dignity of our medics were at stake," Atellah noted. His foray into Lang'ata politics began after he publicly announced his candidacy for the parliamentary seat. Atellah emphasized the importance of standing with people during challenging times, drawing from his experience in advocating for doctors' welfare.

"The fight for doctors taught me something simple: when you are entrusted with the responsibility to serve, you cannot afford to look away," he said. His approach to Lang'ata politics would involve listening to residents, supporting them, and addressing issues affecting the constituency. Atellah's political involvement stems from his successful re-election as KMPDU Secretary-General in April 2026, following the 2026 national and branch elections where he secured 6,231 votes out of 8,894 eligible voters, translating to a 70.01% turnout.

Despite his new political role, Atellah vowed to maintain the principles he has applied in his fight for doctors. "I am not coming to Lang'ata to be another politician. I am coming with the same courage, energy and determination that I have carried into every fight for our doctors," he stated. He added, "The work continues. This time, it is home."

Recently, Atellah also met Community Health Promoters in Mugumoini, Lang'ata, pledging to improve their working conditions if elected to Parliament.
