Flooding forces more than 2,900 families to evacuate across Cambodia

PHNOM PENH — On the 27th of September, 2026, over 2,900 Cambodian families were compelled to leave their homes due to severe flooding impacting 25,561 families in 10 provinces, as reported by a disaster management official. Soth Kim Kolmony, a spokesperson for the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), informed that the rising floodwaters have submerged 24,505 homes and destroyed or damaged 12,551 hectares of rice fields.

The main cause of this flooding, according to Kolmony, is heavy rainfall in local areas, not the overflow of the Mekong River. "The Mekong River levels at most of the key monitoring stations are still below the alert level and are trending downwards," he said. Nevertheless, the situation could persist for several more days, with weather forecasts predicting additional rainfall through September 30th.

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology reported that Cambodia is currently experiencing widespread rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds brought about by peripheral weather systems. Cambodia typically encounters seasonal flash floods between July and October. NCDM data revealed that flooding claimed 19 lives across the nation last year.
