FCCPC seeks stronger media collaboration on consumer protection

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has called for enhanced collaboration between journalists and regulatory institutions to bolster consumer protection efforts in Nigeria. Tunji Bello, FCCPC's Executive Vice Chairman, made the statement while hosting executive members of the Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CICAN) at the commission's headquarters in Abuja.

Bello emphasized the need for journalists to receive adequate training and engagement in competition and consumer protection reporting, highlighting the relative novelty of these specialized beats in the Nigerian context. He assured the association that the FCCPC would consider their request for training and engagement, recognizing the importance of equipping journalists with the knowledge necessary to report on these issues effectively.

The FCCPC has previously supported training programs for judges through the National Judicial Institute to deepen their understanding of competition-related matters. Bello also stressed the crucial role of the media in raising public awareness of the commission and its activities, noting that sustained media coverage has contributed to increasing the public's familiarity with the FCCPC.

CICAN's Abuja Chairman, Gabriel Kuma, reiterated the association's commitment to constructive journalism and stronger engagement with regulatory institutions. Kuma affirmed that effective regulation necessitates a professional relationship between regulators and the media, characterized by openness, accountability, and access to accurate information.

The association will mark its 20th anniversary with a national dialogue on the Federal Government's $1 trillion economy agenda, scheduled for October 20, 2026, at the Barcelona Hotel in Abuja.
