Ekon chief calls for urgent action over prolonged water shortage

Nana Kwame Edu Ababio II, the Chief of Ekon, has implored the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly and the local MP to expedite efforts to address the community's ongoing water crisis. For months, residents have been deprived of a consistent supply of clean drinking water, leading many to venture to Cape Coast in search of potable water. This prolonged shortage has become increasingly burdensome, especially as the Central Region continues to face various challenges impacting access to safe drinking water.

Specifically, the Chief directed his appeal to Cape Coast Mayor George Justice Arthur and Member of Parliament George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, urging them to restore a permanent water supply to Ekon. He highlighted that pipelines servicing the community were reportedly damaged during the construction of the 24-hour economy market in the area.

The disruption of these pipelines has exacerbated an already challenging situation, prompting residents to transport large plastic gallons, known as "Kufuor gallons", to Cape Coast to secure their daily water needs.

The Chief emphasized the undue strain this predicament places on residents and implored authorities to treat the issue with urgency. In response, Mayor George Justice Arthur pledged that the government would tackle the community's challenges. He affirmed the government's commitment to Ekon's development, noting that the 24-hour economy market and a garment factory were strategically located in the area as part of development commitments.

Mayor Arthur assured the Chief and residents that the government would continue to collaborate with stakeholders to alleviate the community's concerns and enhance living conditions in Ekon.
