Dubai unveils advanced testing facility to prepare autonomous vehicles for the roads

Dubai inaugurated its state-of-the-art autonomous vehicle testing facility, Dubai Mobility Labs, on Sunday, situated within Dubai Silicon Oasis. This high-tech lab, established by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority alongside the Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority, offers a comprehensive environment for evaluating self-driving technologies before they hit the roads.

The lab's expansive multi-purpose area includes testing tracks designed to simulate real-world driving conditions, allowing self-driving vehicles to undergo rigorous assessments under various traffic and weather scenarios. Aiming to have 25% of all journeys automated by 2030, Dubai Mobility Labs provides a controlled setting to scrutinize sensing systems, decision-making capabilities, adaptability to evolving road conditions, and overall vehicle readiness.

The facility has already accommodated successful trials of autonomous driving technologies and vehicles from major companies such as WeRide, Pony.ai, and Tesla. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at the Roads and Transport Authority, highlighted the lab's significance as the most advanced ground-testing infrastructure of its kind in the region, aiming to support Dubai's Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy.

Dekra, a global leader in automotive testing and inspections from Germany, has been appointed to operate Dubai Mobility Labs for the initial three years, managing daily operations, organizing tests, and ensuring adherence to international safety standards and best practices.
