Dr. Nergis Mavalvala Delivers Habib University’s 10th Yohsin Lecture on Curiosity and Discovery

Habib University welcomed Dr. Nergis Mavalvala, Dean of Science at MIT, as the tenth speaker in its Yohsin Lecture Series. Her lecture, "The Joy of Discovery: Curiosity, Science, and the Pivotal Role of Universities," was attended by students, faculty, alumni, industry leaders, and Pakistan's scientific community. In her talk, Dr. Mavalvala pondered why humans pursue knowledge, even when there is no apparent practical application.

She emphasized that humans have always been drawn to the mysteries of the universe since prehistoric times. Dr. Mavalvala warned against expecting justification for curiosity, arguing that some of the most groundbreaking discoveries emerged from questions without clear payoff. She stressed that universities must not only train professionals but also foster wonder, creativity, perseverance, and intellectual freedom.

President Wasif Rizvi highlighted the significance of Dr. Mavalvala's visit, particularly the generosity of Mohsineen, in making a world-class education available to all who seek it. The lecture marked a high point in Karachi's intellectual calendar, concluding a two-day engagement at the University. Dr. Mavalvala toured the campus, engaged with faculty on nurturing curiosity, and met with students and alumni from various schools across Karachi.

She also interacted with Pakistan's scientific community and discussed the importance of research investment. The Yohsin Lecture series, a flagship event of Habib University, has hosted notable speakers like Noam Chomsky, Ashis Nandy, Reza Aslan, Azra Raza, and Thomas Blom Hansen, fostering intellectual dialogue in Karachi.
