David goal stands up as Canada beats Chile 1-0 in men’s soccer friendly

Canada's national soccer team secured a 1-0 victory over Chile in an international friendly at BMO Field on Saturday night, marking the beginning of a new four-year cycle for the team. Jonathan David was the hero, scoring the lone goal in the 12th minute, while Dayne St. Clair kept the Chilean attackers at bay with a clean sheet.

David took on the role of captain for this friendly, donning the armband alongside Cyle Larin, who scored in Canada's first World Cup game at the same venue on June 12. The Canadian lineup was missing several key players, including Captain Alphonso Davies, defender Derek Cornelius, and goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau, who were unable to play due to various reasons.

Chile, the current world No. 49, had not qualified for the World Cup since 2014, having last appeared in the tournament in 2014. The match began with a ceremony honoring the World Cup squad, which qualified for the knockout stage for the first time by defeating South Africa 1-0 in the Round of 32. Canada took an early lead, with David capitalizing on a rebound after Christian Bravo saved a shot by Chilean goalkeeper Larin.

Chile responded in the 35th minute when Lucas Cepeda was sent off after a dangerous challenge on Richie Laryea, drawing blood on the defender's head. St. Clair converted the resulting penalty kick moments later. Despite Chile playing with 10 men for the majority of the match, they managed to create a few chances, with Gabriel Suazo receiving a second yellow card in the 62nd minute for a foul on Niko Sigur, resulting in a red card.

Canada pressed hard with 11 men but failed to capitalize, with Jovan Ivanisevic making his debut as a substitute in the 62nd minute. Junior Hoilett, making his final appearance with the national team, came on in the 76th minute and was honored for his 11-year tenure with Canada following the game.
