DA condemns wave of shootings in Gauteng, Western Cape

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is expressing deep concern over a series of random shootings in Gauteng and the Western Cape that have claimed 27 lives in the past 24 hours. The attacks began with the fatal shooting of 17 individuals at a tavern in Wedela, West Rand, Gauteng, followed by another 10 deaths in Lwandle, Strand, just outside Cape Town.

The DA maintains that the country requires a robust crime intelligence service capable of infiltrating criminal networks. They argue that the recent incidents highlight the urgent need to identify threats, dismantle criminal organizations, and prevent violence before it causes further loss of life.

Additionally, the party urges President Cyril Ramaphosa to appoint a permanent Police Minister. "These tragedies demonstrate the dire need for stronger crime intelligence to detect and counteract criminal activity," explains DA MP Lisa Schickerling. "The ongoing instability in police leadership poses a significant threat to public safety. The DA calls for enhanced crime intelligence capabilities, coordinated efforts against organized crime, and immediate measures to protect communities and halt the escalation of violence."
