Calabar erosion: Nigerian govt moves to protect NNPC jetty, Naval assets from ecological disaster

The Nigerian government has taken swift action to address the escalating threats to critical national assets, such as the Nigerian Navy Ship NNS Victory installation and the crucial Nigerian National Petroleum Company jetty in Calabar, Cross River State, following an ecological emergency. This intervention comes after the failure of the underground drainage system on Anansa Road, which led to extensive environmental destruction, infrastructure damage, economic disruption, and loss of life.

Dr. Aishetu Mohammed, the Federal Government's Ecological Project Permanent Secretary, made these disclosures in a statement, emphasizing that the crisis goes beyond a simple drainage issue and poses broader national security and economic concerns. Mohammed, while receiving a delegation from the Cross River State government led by the Environment Commissioner, Bassey Offiong Mensah, stated that the government's response will involve a joint technical assessment to pinpoint the causes of the problem and devise sustainable solutions.

She highlighted the importance of partnering with the state and local communities, respecting their culture, and incorporating their input into the intervention plans.
