Blood Brothers: Minnesota's P.J. Fleck and Maverick Baranowski share unique moment

Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck displayed his intense demeanor following the Gophers' 27-24 victory over Washington. According to Golden Gophers linebacker Maverick Baranowski, "He’s a crazy man." During the post-game celebration, Baranowski, who sustained a bloody mouth from a cleat hit during the final play, was embraced by Fleck.

In an act of solidarity, Fleck used his own hand to wipe the blood from Baranowski's mouth, leaving a distinct mark on his cheek. Fleck, who has been coaching Minnesota since 2017, explained that this gesture symbolized their "blood brother" bond, a tradition stemming from frontier times. The Gophers' road win marked their first since a 24-7 triumph against Wisconsin on November 29, 2024.

Baranowski praised the team's victory, stating that winning is challenging in the Big Ten, and winning at home is especially exciting. Receiver Javon Tracy, who contributed seven receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown, described Fleck as "different" and "very energetic." Baranowski, who has been with the Gophers throughout his career, recorded seven tackles, a sack, and an interception in the game.

The pivotal moment came when Anthony Smith tackled UW quarterback Demond Williams Jr., causing an errant throw that led to Baranowski's interception and the Gophers' lead. Following the game, Fleck's white sleeve still bore traces of blood. Baranowski is considered one of Fleck's favorite players he has coached, describing him as the "heartbeat" of the defense and the team.
