Bengals’ revamped defense regresses against Steelers as Cincinnati falls short of 3-0 start

In a 30-27 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cincinnati Bengals' revamped defense struggled to contain the offense, falling short of a 3-0 start to the season. The Steelers' offense, which had managed one touchdown during the first eight quarters of the season, found the end zone three times and accumulated 411 yards against the revamped unit.

Cincinnati's defense, led by defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, allowed the Steelers to compile 176 rushing yards, including 127 on the ground by running back Jaylen Warren. Lawrence and the rest of the defense appeared to falter repeatedly, with the Steelers scoring on each of their first three possessions and being at midfield on their fourth when Rodgers' pass was intercepted by safety Jordan Battle.

The Bengals were also at fault, as punt returner Ke’Shawn Williams allowed the ball to hit his facemask, leading to a field goal for the Steelers. Despite a crucial holding penalty nullifying a Bengals touchdown run by Warren, the Steelers capitalized on a 47-yard catch-and-run by tight end Darnell Washington to take the lead. With just seconds left, Joe Burrow failed to capitalize on a field-goal opportunity, allowing Pittsburgh to secure the victory.

The Bengals' coach, Zac Taylor, admitted the team must improve its defensive performance, but the team's failure to do so ultimately led to the loss.
