In response to the recent incidents of bullying at educational institutions, the government has emphasized the need to establish a nationwide standard operating procedure (SOP) for handling such issues. Former Deputy Minister of Education, P Kamalanathan, stated that the Ministry of Education (KPM), the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), and the Ministry of Defence each have their own SOPs, but a unified approach is necessary to ensure consistent and rapid management of every case.

Kamalanathan highlighted the importance of a clear timeline for response, investigation, and action - within 24 hours, seven days, and 14 days respectively. The recent suicide of a secondary school student in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, has reignited the discussion on student safety. Kamalanathan suggested reviewing the student-warden ratio in full-boarding schools and enhancing the role of counselors, along with creating a dedicated and child-friendly anti-bullying complaint portal.

He also stressed the need for early detection protocols to identify issues before bullying occurs, and for teachers and counselors to be the first line of defense. Promoting communication skills, empathy, and teaching students how to respect others and respond to bullying incidents are crucial. Parents must also play a vital role in monitoring their children's behavior and providing support at home. Kamalanathan supported Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and KPM in their efforts to tackle bullying.
