Bangkok declared disaster zone

A flood emergency has been declared in Bangkok after more than 300mm (12in) of rain fell since Thursday, submerging roads in the Thai capital. The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority reported that while the rains have subsided, canal water levels remain high, and the city's governor warns that flooding is not yet over. Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors, while those living near the city's canals have been advised to move their belongings to higher floors.

The city's drainage system is overwhelmed, causing traffic chaos on already congested roads. A local resident, 67-year-old Somkid Pheuk-ngam, described the water as reaching waist level and said she had been forced to close her shop for two days. She believes the current flooding is worse than the 2011 nationwide flooding that left hundreds dead.

The Thai Meteorological Service forecasts more heavy rain throughout the week, with low pressure expected to move towards central Thailand. All 50 districts of Bangkok have been declared emergency zones, with the east of the city hit hardest. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt acknowledged the ongoing challenges, stating that the rain continues to fall and pumping efforts are underway, but warned that the risk areas are those living near canals, as every canal is now filled.
