Ackers praises Bulls’ defence, lineouts after Zebre thrashing

Head coach Johan Ackermann praised the Bulls' performance in their recent 7-try win over Zebre in Parma, highlighting their strong defence and lineout efforts. He noted that this was a significant improvement from their first away game in the United Rugby Championship last year, where they lost heavily to Ulster. However, Ackermann acknowledged there was still room for improvement, especially in the scrum department, as they prepare to face 2023 winners Munster in Limerick.

New signing, former Springbok Curwin Bosch, was instrumental in the victory, slotting all four of his conversions and displaying great control during his debut game. Ackermann commended Bosch for his performance, stating he controlled the game well, even though he had been out of action due to an injury. The only setback was prop Mornay Smith, who had to be substituted after twisting his ankle, though the coach expressed hope it wasn't a severe injury.

Ackermann emphasized that the team managed to secure the win despite the nerves and lack of warm-up games, as they played only around 40 minutes per player. He highlighted the team's resilience in defence against a formidable opponent and tough away location. The coach was particularly pleased with the lock combination of Ruan Vermaak and Reinhardt Ludwig, replacing Vermaak in the 70th minute, following Springbok Ruan Nortjé's move to Japan this season.

Ackermann was satisfied with the lineouts, as they won most of them, except one in the corner. He also acknowledged that the tight five contributed heavily in the game but recognized the need for improvement in the scrum, which had mixed results.
