A different way to experience durian season in Melaka

In Melaka, a durian orchard offers visitors a unique way to experience the fruit beyond the typical tasting session during peak season. The 17-hectare orchard managed by Duta Riang Villa is home to 1,600 durian trees, including popular varieties such as Musang King, Black Thorn, Kim Hong, and Udang Merah.

Run by Koh Kai Xiang, the orchard aims to provide a deeper understanding of durian trees and their fruits. Visitors can learn about the differences between varieties, the factors affecting fruit quality, and the stages of growth, from flowering to fruit development. For instance, Musang King and Udang Merah typically mature earlier than Black Thorn, and care varies depending on the weather and growth stage.

One of the most intriguing features is the grafted trees that grow two varieties simultaneously, with one variety beneath the other on the same root system. This unique method may result in larger fruit compared to conventional trees. Orchard worker Ahmad Safwan Fathi Zainuddin explained the process and demonstrated how different varieties mature at varying rates.

The 17-hectare orchard also features recreational activities like a mini zoo, archery, and ATV rides, making it an ideal destination for families. These activities allow visitors to spend more time exploring the orchard and the durian trees, rather than simply stopping to eat the fruit.

Koh Kai Xiang hopes that visitors will leave with a greater appreciation for the effort that goes into producing durian. The Melaka durian season typically runs from May to July, although weather and growing conditions can cause fluctuations in timing. Many visitors return for subsequent seasons, and the orchard has attracted tourists from abroad, including South Korea.
